Local transit

There are two ways to arrive on the island of Aeroe: by ferry/boat  or by airplane . Either way, you can get to Den Charmerende Villa with little effort.  From the ferry in Aeroeskoebing, you can catch the bus that meets the ferry on its arrival. Lille Rise village, where Den Charmerende Villa is located, is the first village up one of the two main roads out of Aeroeskoebing. There is also taxi service. If you have a car, the drive is short, only 3-4 kilometers; and if you're in good shape the distance is also an option by bicycle. As for the airport, it is also easy distance. We can see the airport from the villa and take bicycles down that way routinely. The airline that manages the airport, Starling Air, rents bicycles out as well - so you can plan ahead and let your last leg be a pleasant ride to the house. If you choose this method - you may want to check our maps section as one of the maps details the route to and from the airport.

Lille Rise and Den Charmerende Villa

Most of the villages on Aeroe were largely self-contained farm communities when they developed long ago. They had local grocers, that sold more than just food items, and local iron mongers or smiths; whereas, justice and medical services were distributed by travelling judges and doctors who visited the areas. Most children born here are aided by the local midwife - whose efforts are most appreciated. Local travel was by foot in the old days, and whether on foot or with horse, people typically stopped and often overnighted at the village kro, or Inn, along the way. Lille Rise no longer has a kro, but there's a very authentic one nearby in the village of Dunkaer. If you stop in, you may notice people speaking in dialect! And don't mind if they 'notice' you when you arrive; when its authentic, you are the novelty! People are very friendly - so just give the locals a nod or a smile and you'll surely enjoy the stop.

Homes, and the barns used by homeowners, were built centrally in the old days with associated farmland laying outside the village center.  When you see properties with three buildings connected, these were most certainly farms that were reasonably successful. People lived in one vuilding. Machines in another. And animals in the third.  These layouts are typcial in Lille Rise, although after the turn of the 20th cerntury, homes were often built on or near the land that was being farmed. Here you can see a map (we HOPE you can access it this way and are working on another possible method for this particular map: click where it says "vis"; inside the map you can use the select tool to enlarge the center area) of Lille Rise created and maintianed by the local parish dating back to the 1860s.  You can see Den Charmerende Villa on the small-appearing lot numbered 8. As shown, it sits on the outer edge of the central area and adjacent to farmland. You can also see this in the aerial photos below.

The early buildings on the property once known as the Solnaes farm, were subject to a fire in 1923, and the barn burned down. Den Charmerence Villa itself also had fire damage and the charred beams remained until they were replaced in 2006 by a completely new roof. Before the fire, a 'newer' building had been built adjacent to Den Charmerende Villa, and that is our primary residence today.  The guesthouse that we rent out is fully modernized for comfort, charm and convenience, while still having a sense of times gone by.
